A lit billboard has one major advantage: it works after dark. That matters for restaurants, hotels, emergency services, medical clinics, plumbers, HVAC companies, convenience stores, and any business that benefits from night traffic.
An unlit billboard may receive less attention after sunset. A practical rule of thumb in the billboard business is that an unlit board may be valued around 20% less than a comparable lit board because it loses visibility during night hours. That is not an exact number for every location, but it is a useful way to think about the difference.
However, an unlit billboard can still be valuable. If the board is in a strong daytime traffic location, near a school route, shopping center, job corridor, or busy commuter road, it may still produce excellent results. A local service business may care more about morning and afternoon traffic than late-night traffic.
Lighting is especially important on interstate boards because interstate traffic runs at all hours. Hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and emergency services can benefit from visibility at night. On the other hand, a local board near a daytime retail area may still work well without lights if the price is right.
The question is not simply, “Is the board lit?” The better question is, “When is my customer driving past this sign?”
A lit board is generally stronger. But an unlit board in the right location, at the right price, with the right message, can still be a smart advertising buy.
Best rule: lighting adds value, but location and audience still matter most.
