Directional Billboards: When the Goal Is to Drive Traffic Now

Some billboards are for brand awareness. Others are for direct action. Directional billboards are designed to move customers to a specific place.

Directional boards work well for restaurants, gas stations, hotels, tourist attractions, urgent care clinics, retail stores, entertainment venues, churches, and local events. These ads often use simple wording like:

    • “Exit Now.”
    • “Next Right.”
    • “2 Miles Ahead.”
    • “Turn Left at the Light.”
    • “Open 24 Hours.”

The message must be extremely clear. A directional billboard should not be crowded with too many details. The driver needs to know three things: what the business is, where to go, and why to stop.

A good directional billboard can be especially powerful near exits, intersections, bypasses, shopping areas, and town entrances. The closer the board is to the decision point, the more important the directional message becomes.

For example, a restaurant five miles away may need to build awareness. A restaurant at the next exit needs to create action. Those are different billboard strategies.

Directional billboards should use arrows carefully. The arrow must match the real movement the driver needs to make. Confusing directions can hurt the campaign.

Best rule: when the customer is close, make the billboard tell them exactly what to do next.
